What is the Ansi 107 standard

Jun 14, 2023

ANSI 107, also known as the American National Standard for High Visibility Safety Apparel and Accessories, is a set of guidelines and standards developed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to improve worker visibility in low light or high traffic work environments.

HIGH VISION CLOTHING

The ANSI 107 standard classifies high visibility safety apparel (HVSA) into three classes. The class determines the minimum amount of fluorescent and reflective material that a garment must contain.

Class 1 HVSA is designed for workers who work in low traffic areas and require minimal visibility enhancement. Examples of class 1 HVSA include safety vests with 1 inch wide reflective tape.

Class 2 HVSA is intended for workers who work near or in traffic with speeds less than 25 mph. The minimum reflective tape requirement for class 2 HVSA is 1.375 inches. Examples of class 2 HVSA include high visibility shirts, vests, jackets, and pants.

Class 3 HVSA is intended for workers who work near or in traffic with speeds greater than 50 mph and contrasting background elements. The minimum reflective tape requirement for class 3 HVSA is 2 inches. Examples of class 3 HVSA include high visibility jackets, coveralls, and full body suits.

ANSI 107 also specifies specific requirements for fluorescent chromaticity and color, retroreflective properties, garment design, and care and maintenance of the high visibility safety apparel.

The adoption of ANSI 107 guidelines and standards is crucial in industries such as construction, road work, law enforcement, and emergency services to prevent accidents and increase worker safety. Employers are responsible for ensuring their workers have the appropriate class of HVSA for their work environment and ensuring that the HVSA is properly maintained and replaced when necessary.

In conclusion, ANSI 107 is an important set of guidelines and standards that improve worker visibility and safety in low light or high traffic work environments. Employers are responsible for ensuring their workers have the appropriate class of HVSA for their work environment and adhering to the care and maintenance requirements of the HVSA garments.
