How To Prepare Emergency Rescue Team

Jul 16, 2022

Emergencies can occur at any time, such as fires, explosions, toxic chemical spills, falls from heights, confined space accidents, etc. At this time, it is very important to have an accident command center and a well-prepared emergency rescue team, who can immediately arrive at the emergency scene to rescue and evacuate the trapped people.

Why is it necessary to prepare an emergency rescue team?

According to research, more than 60% of workers die in confined spaces while trying to rescue colleagues. When the person working in the confined space becomes slow to react, the worker in charge of monitoring will enter the confined space to check on his buddies, causing them to be injured by the same deadly gas.

In general, almost all workplaces require advance rescue training when workers are required to access heights or enter confined spaces. Having a qualified emergency rescue team is an important guarantee for preventing disasters and risks.

What are the standards for emergency rescue teams?

Globally, there are two standards that provide clear guidelines for emergency rescue teams:

NFPA 1670:2017- Standard on Operations and Training for Technical Search and Rescue Incidents

NFPA 1006:2017- Standard for Technical Rescue Personnel Professional Qualifications

Requirements of Emergency Rescue Team (ERT)

Emergency rescue teams (ERT) Roles & responsibilities: 1 Rescue Team Leader, 2 Entry Rescuers, 2 Rescue System Operators, 1 Accident Command Center

Rescue Kit

In addition, emergency rescue teams need a set of rescue kits that can be readily deployed in the event of an emergency. A rescue package should contain full body safety harness, fall arrester, anchorage rope, knife, lanyard, grip descender, carabiner, anchorage webbing sling and cows tail.

Training requirements

Training is critical to building the capacity of responders, using rescue kits and improving their preparedness. It will ensure that they do not put themselves at risk during rescue operations and are able to make critical decisions in high-pressure situations. Some basic training is listed below

Rescue technique training

Advanced first aid CPR training. In addition, improved technical skills will contribute to better coordination and the effective use of disaster management tools. Thus, threats to life and property can be eliminated or minimized, thereby preserving the reputation of the organization. Upon completion of this training, the Emergency Response team will be able to develop and implement rescue plans in their workplace.
