How to properly use energy absorbing lanyards

Oct 21, 2022

When climbing at heights, a pair of energy absorbing lanyard is necessary , both hooks are attached to a single energy absorber, which is constantly connected to high structure to protect you all the time.

Once you arrive at the workplace, the first thing is to look for a suitable anchor point. Please be careful that these anchor points can't be too low, because this will increase your fall distance and the potential of hitting obstacles beneath you, the best way is to look for a little bit higher anchor point.

An anchor like below picture is not a good ideal, because it doesn't load the connector properly. At the same time, diagonal anchor points where the connector might slide are not suitable. When you fall, the connector will slide the length of the diagonal, adding height to your fall distance, and it might even exceed the capacity of the energy absorber. Of course, the anchor point can’t be too high either, which might limit the workplace.

What is the role of second hook while working? If you connect this leg of the lanyard to a structural part of your harness, whether it’s an anchor point or even a gear loop, during the fall, the energy absorber begins to deploy, but it will be stopped quickly as this rigid part of the lanyard becomes tight. It will increase the impact force on the harness, user and anchor point.

A simple way of dealing with this second leg is to clip it in the same place as original lanyard, it is tidy and out of the way. Before you enter the workplace, you can use a work positioning lanyard and adjust it until it's the right length, then you can continue your job.
